THE HISTORY OF SILVER

Silver is a naturally occurring element with symbol Ag which comes from the Latin word "argentum". Together with gold and copper, it is one of the longest known metals and has already been used as an ornament in ancient times. Back then it was at times even more valuable than gold.

Humans have used silver for at least 7000 years. Although it is a rare element, it occurs about 20 times more often than gold and is used in the photo, electrical and chemical industries. However, the majority of silver now flows into the jewelry trade, with the two countries Peru and Mexico being the world's largest silver producers.

WHAT IS STERLING SILVER AND WHAT DOES THE NUMBER 925 INDICATE?

Sterling silver is an alloy created when copper is added to pure silver which has an actual silver content of 99,9%. The term sterling silver goes back to the British pound sterling and is now the most commonly used alloy. It consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper, which gives the metal a slightly reddish shimmering hue. Nowadays, sterling silver is used for silver jewelry, coins, cutlery, trophies, flutes and light metal lacquers for e.g. wheel rims.

The advantage of 925 silver compared to pure silver is the higher resistance. Sterling silver is not only harder but also more robust. Molten silver dissolves about 20 times its volume of oxygen causing the pure silver to tear open when it solidifies. Due to the copper content the cracking of the surface is reduced significantly. With these high-quality features, pure 925 sterling silver is the perfect material to create elegant and enduring jewelry such as cufflinks.

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR SILVER CUFFLINKS

Like any silver alloy, sterling silver also tends to react (oxidize) with oxygen, which results in a dark coloration. This is not a sign of poor quality, but a normal chemical reaction. In order to preserve the shine, you should maintain your silver cufflinks from time to time.

We recommend that you use the same for cleaning your silverware. Another method are effective and gentle silver polishing cloths, which are provided with a special coating, and are available in drugstores and supermarkets for little money.
